Production Superintendent

Role Summary

The Superintendent, isa member of the paper making departments management team that is responsible for providing overall leadership, operational strategies, and ensuring excellent safety performance. This role ensures the safe and efficient operations of all activities within the Department. This role reports to the Manufacturing Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following):

  • Utilize and refine standard work systems to effect sustainable positive results in safety, environmental, people, quality, cost, and performance
  • Demonstrate safety as a core value by creating a safe work environment
  • Lead safety systems and processes that support achieving our continually improving annual goals
  • Ensure efficient operation of department machines
  • Develop and implement quality strategies ensuring compliance with customer specifications
  • Develop leadership reports through mentorship and proven leadership and accountability methods
  • Collaborates with all levels of management personnel to establish production and quality control standards, develop budgets and cost controls to help ensure long term sustainability
  • Manage all area production activities and establish area production priorities for products in keeping with effective operations and cost factors
  • Develop area budgets and manage costs within established budget and take ownership for financial performance of area
  • Implement and manage improvement strategies designed to: include all other production areas, increase customer satisfaction, increase yield and operating efficiency, reduce cost, and improve reliability.
  • Enforce strict safety standards and practices. Be aware of existing safety hazards and make every feasible attempt to correct these hazards
  • Collaborate with Plant Leadership, Maintenance, Quality, Shipping and area leadership assuring alignment with meeting quality standards and operational efficiencies
  • Determine capital needs of area and develop and oversee area capital improvement projects
  • Provide input on capital projects and strategic improvement plans for all other Mill areas
  • Ensure communication of business strategy, goals, and initiatives to mill and area leadership
  • Manages continuous improvement projects for area of responsibility
  • Coordinates with maintenance to prioritize maintenance and outage needs
  • Coordinates predictive and preventative maintenance activities establishing long-term sustainability for equipment
  • Develop and execute strategic plans to increase overall area efficiency
  • Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance, and operational reports to determine causes of nonconformity with product specifications, and operating or production problems
  • Develops strategy to ensure operational efficiencies, standard operating methods and procedures designed to eliminate throughput issues and improve product quality
  • Maintain effective communications and working relationships with Operations Departments, Suppliers, Maintenance, Safety, IT, Environmental, Human Resources, Engineering, and Purchasing



Qualifications:

Required Skills / Background

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Paper Science or related field with five years of operations experience within the paper industry including five (5) years of progressive leadership roles

OR

  • Ten plus years of progressive and practical paper making experience including five (5) years of progressive paper machine supervisory experience
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Proven strong strategic planning and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills of the paper making process
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategic priorities to meet short and long-term objectives
  • Proven ability to lead by example and mentor leadership staff
  • Demonstrated ability to drive change leading to improved performance over time
  • Strong organizational skills with the proven ability develop and implement changes necessitated by internal and external business conditions
  • Solid oral and written communication skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the operation of an integrated mill
  • Proficient at managing all levels of an operating area and interfacing with all levels of an organization
  • Possess an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, with a situational (servant, directive, collaborative) leadership approach to managing the team
  • Must be able to pass a background check, drug screening and reference check
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Proven experience with reliability and continuous improvement principles and techniques

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience within a unionized environment

  • Kepner Tregoe or other problem analysis tools
