The Electrical Controls engineer will be responsible for taking product requirements and developing solutions that achieve functional safe products for the machining, welding, and valve testing systems. The Electrical controls engineer will be required to develop schematics that define the hardware required to achieve specifications as well as define and edit software that can be configured for global market applications. The applicant must have the ability to work with a cross functional team to ensure the electronics and mechanical systems work together as required, while ensuring they are on budget and on schedule. This role will cross over between embedded systems as well as PLC based controls varying by product line, so experience in these areas is a plus.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Designs industrial control systems on assigned new product development teams, complete electrical architecture, hardware design, etc.
• Has experience developing statements of work to ensure global control engineers can support design and testing functions.
• Provides support on existing controls in the interest of sustaining existing products.
• Provides technical support and troubleshooting assistance to customers via telephone, or on site.
• Provides technical support and troubleshooting assistance to assembly and repair technicians.
• Control system design on technical proposals for new business opportunities - design concepts, performing specification reviews and generating compliance matrices, technical writing, identifying risk, and support of Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) and Recurring Cost (RC) estimates.
• Leads R & D project activities in support of new technology and innovation.
• Prepares all design related documentation, such as drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), Sequence of operations, specification development, risk assessments, functional test procedures, product regulatory compliance reports and Operator Manuals.
• Has the ability to define product testing, as well as the ability to conduct testing when required, in support of new designs or sustaining engineering.
• Oversees qualification programs to ensure that function tests, reliability tests and electrical safety tests are completed correctly and on time.
• Conduct Electrical Safety Testing including such tests as ground bond continuity, insulation resistance, dielectric withstand test and leakage current test.
• Supports Operations in electrical equipment used to test product in production. This may include but is not limited to automated testing simulators, load testers, and function test equipment.
• Experience in PCB layout and component selection for embedded system controls preferred.
• Provide electrical analysis in support of root cause and corrective actions of failed returned by the customer, field warranty issues.
• Supports other engineers, as required, in design reviews and project proposals.
• Ensures that all control systems meet the relevant regulatory safety standards for various regional markets,
including U.S. National Electric Code NFPA79, CE Compliance, CSA, Other National or international standards as required.
• Experience with Mitsubishi, Delta or Schneider PLC ladder logic programming preferred.
• Ensures that all control systems are designed to be robust, reliable and suitable for the harsh environment and rough use of field Machine Tools.
• Ensures designs are within expected cost and budget requirements, are completed on time, and meet customer requirements.
• Has the ability to communicate the status of engineering efforts to management, project/principal engineers, and program management.
• Handles stress in a professional manner, demonstrates the ability to get along with others, demonstrates successful attendance and punctuality, and works overtime / extra hours as required to meet business needs.
• Approximately 25% travel.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Bachelors in electrical engineering; Mechanical Engineering degree is acceptable if accompanied with relevant field experience in industrial automation control systems; 5+ years applicable experience in design, development, and testing of industrial automation control systems. The ideal candidate will also have knowledge and experience with hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical applications.
• Experience in all aspects of the design of industrial automation control systems including PLC programming, HMI screen development, motion control, instrumentation, and electrical distribution in industrial machines.
• Development of specifications for control systems design and instrumentation.
• Must have industrial automation control system and field instrument experience and be familiar with the various hardware/software products and services employed for process control system projects.
• Competent with Altium (or similar program), AutoCAD Electrical for use in the generation of electrical schematics and assembly drawings.
• Understanding and use of lab equipment – power supplies, oscilloscopes, hi-pot testers, Megger, multi-meters, etc.
