Sr. Electrical Engineer (Power Generation)


Description:

Seeking an Engineer to provide a wide range of engineering expertise to the company’s fleet of power generating facilities.  The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of power generating experience or manufacturing experience with an emphasis in heavy electrical equipment or controls.   The Engineer will be required to interact with all facilities in the Company's Fleet providing technical support for electrical issues, overseeing NERC compliance, supporting regional ISO (PJM, NEISO, and NYISO) technical requests, and supporting development work. The ideal individual will have excellent communication skills plus a combination of strong field engineering, troubleshooting, and project management experiences. The position will work closely and collaboratively with all levels of the organization from the Corporate C level, to plant staff and regulatory agencies. The individual will report to the Sr. Director Plant Performance.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Provide subject matter expertise for High Voltage Electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, controls, relays and transmission equipment.
  • Provide Engineering support to respond to NEISO, NYISO, and PJM request for technical information
  • Provide NERC compliance oversight of all facilities and manage O&M service provider supporting day to day NERC compliance
  • Support other Solar and Battery Energy Storage Development activities, specifically with electrical interconnections.
  • Prepare project analysis, budgets, schedules, and plans
  • Prepare, implement, provide guidance, or assist in preparing and developing the engineering deliverables for projects and major equipment procurement such as power transformers, power circuit breakers, and other related materials
  • Develop equipment and construction specifications
  • Analyze bids and recommend selection of equipment and/or constructor
  • Work closely with colleagues at the site to investigate and conduct root cause analysis of underperforming plant areas or systems and to identify options for the mitigation or elimination of these deficiencies
  • Support day-to-day operational activities, outage work, new projects and programs as required
  • Familiar with state and federal safety, regulatory compliance requirements, and construction codes
  • Support construction and equipment testing and commissioning
  • Coordinate and provide technical assistance for SCADA, substation/plant physical, and control projects in order to fully develop system integration of protection, control, and monitoring systems
  • The position will require travel to the sites as necessary to support various activities ~5%.

 

Qualifications:

  • 5-10 Years of power generation experience (or Manufacturing with heavy electrical)
  • Familiarity with the typical failure modes of the normal power plant materials, systems and plant component items and methods of non-destructive test used on generators, transformers, cables, insulation systems and major plant items
  • Familiarity with the principles of power plant auxiliary power distribution systems, properties of electrical materials, test procedures
  • Proficient understanding of the utility grid (power generation, transmission and distribution) systems
  • Knowledge of protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major plant and substation equipment
  • Ability to understand relaying one-lines and control schematics
  • Experience with plant and substation physical electrical, protection and control design schematics, SCADA systems, including station communications and station automation design
  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA and ANSI
  • Medium and high voltage experience with transformers, switchgear, breakers and power cables, generators, motors, MCC’s, power panels, buss-work, or electric transmission is required 
  • Design and project experience of overhead and underground medium and high voltage distribution/transmission cables, re-conductoring and asset replacement transmission projects in NYC or urban environment is desiredTeam player who can work effectively in team environment

  • High level of computer and internet competency
  • Proficiency with using Windows-based software programs
  • Engineering Degree preferred but not required.
  • Experience with regional RTO’s (NYISO, PJM, NEISO) preferred but not required Experience in electrical system modeling, relay coordination, short circuit studies, setting microprocessor-based relays, field commissioning of electrical systems, NYISO interconnect studies is a plus
  • Experience with NERC standards, preferred but not required
