Lead Mechanical Engineer


Description

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Lead to provide fixed equipment reliability expertise while mentoring and developing mechanical engineers. The Mechanical Engineering Lead works closely with the operations and maintenance departments to establish priorities of work and following through with proactive design and execution of projects.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead plays a key role supporting the mission to operate safely, reliably, predictably, and without incident at a competitive sustainable cost.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead takes a lead role in understanding and evaluating plant performance, working closely with the Operations and Maintenance departments to establish priorities of work, and following through with proactive design and execution of work packages and projects.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead provides subject matter expertise in the area of fixed equipment. Specifically, pressure vessels, boiler and piping design, fabrication testing and inspection, including repair and alteration strategies per industry, site-specific,
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead is responsible for the ownership and maintenance of the engineering practices and all technical documentations and specifications related to fixed equipment assets, relief valves, piping, bolting, repairs/alterations, pressure relief systems and pressure/leak testing.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead is responsible for performing and/or overseeing advanced analytical methods such fitness-for-service, repair of live equipment, or finite element analysis.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead develops and mentors Mechanical Engineers through technical document generation to support the procurement or modification of fixed and rotating equipment including pressure vessels, tanks, separators, filters, heat transfer equipment, piping, pumps, and compressors.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead ensures Management of Change compliance of the Mechanical Engineers process throughout projects from concept to commissioning to closeout.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead provides guidance and mentorship to the Mechanical Engineer’s support for daily, routine operation of multiple assigned process units within the refinery.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead may facilitate or guide standard refinery reliability studies and work practices such as Design for Reliability within large capital projects, Asset Criticality / Asset Strategy assessments, or Damage Mechanism Reviews.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead can further develop and manage a suite of key performance indicators (KPIs) around equipment mechanical integrity and reliability.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead participates or leads Mechanical Engineers in the development of turnaround planning and execution to ensure turnarounds achieve fixed equipment reliability improvement goals.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Lead may provide some guidance in corrosion engineering and risk management specifically related to API RP 571 Damage Mechanisms Affecting Fixed Equipment in the Refining Industry.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • The candidate must have 5 years of engineering experience in a refinery, power plant, or other industrial facility reliant on fixed equipment.
  • The candidate must have a Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited institution in either mechanical, chemical, or metallurgical engineering.
  • The candidate must be able to work safely in an operating refinery environment.

 

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES / ADDITIONAL SKILS

  • The ideal candidate will need to have excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • The candidate will need to have strong technical and analytical skills.
  • The candidate has passed their NCEES Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Exam.
  • The candidate has experience leading teams of 2 to 6 direct reports.
  • The preferred candidate will have 5+ years’ experience in the refining/petrochemical industry with 5+ years’ experience in fixed and/or pressure equipment and possess a strong understanding of fixed equipment design, fabrication, inspection, and testing.
  • Also desired skills include exposure or experience in Fixed Equipment Reliability Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, or Mechanical Integrity roles.
  • The preferred candidate will have experience in performing and/or reviewing API 579 Fitness for Service assessments for fixed equipment.
  • The ideal candidate should be able to quickly navigate and correctly apply ASME, NBIC, API 510, API 570, API 653, and other applicable codes and standards in the design, evaluation, repair/alterations of fixed equipment.
  • Experience with GE Digital’s Asset Performance Management (APM) and/or Maximo (CMMS) is preferred.
